These vintage Cherokees and Wagoneers have been gaining more and more respect lately as people realize that maybe Jeep (in its various forms) was onto something way back when. First referred to as a "Sport Utility" in the 1974 Jeep sales material, these trucks mark the starting point of a market that is still growing today. This 2 Door Cherokee looks to be in semi-shabby, but original condition and could be a great example to breathe new life into.
Powered by the "little" AMC 258 inline 6, this would have been the lowest spec model on the lot at a time when the V8 models claimed to break 100 MPH. A scary, but impressive proposition given the leaf springs, and (we assume) drum brakes all around.
A two door SUV of this size may seem odd, but the 4 door version of the "sporty" Cherokee didn't appear until 1975. This one has rust (and rust repair) all along the rockers, but the clean bits of apple green paint and the white roof look great in photos. Those photos might be helped by the Rocky Mountains in the background, but it works for us.
No shots of the undercarriage are shown, which is of some concern given the holes in the rockers, and rust on the 6 lug wheels. That kind of issue is to be expected of any car of this age and provenance though. However, the chrome looks to be in great shape so this may indeed have minimal rust that needs to be addressed.
The interior is 1979 rumpus-room fresh with tan as far as the eye can see with tufted leather complimented by velour. A power driver's seat is a surprising option and may be put to good use finding a comfortable position to row the long-throw 4-speed from.
This 1975 Cherokee is in Colorado Springs and has a buy it now price of $6,500 which we don't mind if it could be massaged into serviceable shape with minimal effort. Down the road, losing the lump of the 258 would be an easy upgrade on the way to a more robust driver. We'd love to have this in the garage for a year or two to remind all of those modern so-called SUV's out there about their elders.
