This 1987 Toyota Pickup looks to be in excellent condition even with nearly a quarter million miles on it (damn you, California.) Add the rare turbocharged engine to the sharp edges of the 4th generation of Hilux / Pickup model and you've got a winning combo.
This truck, equipped with the 22R-TE is an interesting model that served as a bit of a stopgap for Toyota when they didn't have a V6 ready to fight competition from Nissan in the late 80's. It was available in the 4Runner as well but to our (admittedly limited) knowledge, the pickup was the only way to get it attached to a 5-speed in a truck.
Outside, things look clean and straight with what we assume is a brand new paint job since the rear bumper is still missing. It's claimed to be entirely rust free which is believable with its Southern California roots, but we'd like to see some undercarriage photos anyway. Second generation 4Runner wheels with big tires are a little much for our taste but we don't mind them.
It's one thing to slap a paint job on a car and have it look shiny, but the interior is another world altogether. This one looks unbelievably clean with an old Fj-style rubber floor cover and door cards that are so clean we would think they were recovered if everything else didn't look so good.
We love the special warning sticker cautioning drivers not to stop the engine suddenly after strenuous driving. It reminds us of our days with hot rodded Audi's when everyone was concerned with turbo timers.
Though the V6 that was introduced a few years later probably makes more sense for most things "truck" we do love a 22R-E so we're pretty into this little turbo pickup. Though we have no room or need for it, we'll be keeping an eye on this sale.
