As the weather gets warmer, our thoughts turn to open vehicles. While we love roadsters, our preference runs towards the "practicality" that 4x4's offer when it comes to open top motoring. With Summer fever kicking in, this Land Rover caught our eye with its LHD and stripped down simplicity. The shot if it parked next to a 110 and Syncro didn't hurt either.
This 1985 Land Rover 90 landed in Texas by way of the Netherlands and is about as minimal as can be. Though they're not shown, the seller says a hardtop and set of full doors are included. We assume it’s a full top, but a half cab is possible as well.
1985 would have been early in the transition from Series III to 90 / Defender-to be but this model has some nice improvements over its earlier siblings. Specifically, the old leaf springs would have been replaced by coil springs which help things both on and off road.
This model has the NA 2.5 liter diesel so highway speeds will be something of a challenge, but that's the case even with the turbo units. Though horsepower is in the range of 60 or so,, the 4 speed transmission should provide more than enough performance for an around town runabout or beach cruiser. Photos show a dirty, but seemingly dry engine bay.
The seller states that "lots of new parts" have been put on this truck including a new dash, armor plates, front grill, window seals, doors, and a tailgate. We'd like to know the story behind some of that work and we'd be curious as to what exactly "all new lighting" entails. New lights? Wiring?
The white repaint looks good in the small photos, and adds to the minimal look of things. The same with skinny tires on blacked out rims. We'd probably paint the front bumper black to complete the look and we'd like to get a look at the doors and top to see how it all goes together. We like the empty cargo area for utility and we're always leary of the cargo seats in the rear anyway.
Rusty frames and bulkheads are always an issue on these, and no photos are provided nor mention made of either.
Would this be the most practical open top 4-wheeler? No way. Is it practical to buy it sight unseen? Hell no. Are we itching to have it in our garage by the time the summer is here? You know it.
Save us from ourselves by buying this Land Rover before we do something rash.
