With only 6,500 miles since new, this Scirocco looks way better than we recall these first generation models ever looking. Platinum metallic paint over red leather(ette) is a great combination and we even like the stripes.
We're half considering calling the listing dealer just to get the story on this time capsule VW. We're not sure how this car could have made it 1 year without accumulating 6,500 miles let alone 36 years.
With AC, alloy wheels, metallic paint, 5-speed, and leatherette this Scirocco is about as fully equipped as possible. The original window sticker is included and the radio delete option is interesting -- especially since a very factory looking radio is there.
Low mileage is great, but a car that has been sitting can often be troublesome. This car has had a good deal of refreshing including timing belts, water pump, fuel pump, and motor mounts. We assume that the rubber mounts just disintegrated over time. The tires are also newer and both the brake and coolant systems have been flushed.
All of that work (and more) got this Scirocco past a PA state inspection so there’s at least some low-level assurance of operating condition for cross-country buyers.
As would be expected with such a low mileage example, everything looks extremely clean in the well lit, outdoor photos. Paint is shiny, lines are straight, and gaps appear as good as they ever were. Shots of the inside of the trunk show paint that looks as if it has never seen sunlight since it left Germany.
Inside, the red leatherette and door cards look surprisingly modern and the sea of crimson is enough to offset the wood veneer on the dash. The golf ball shifter on the optional 5-speed transmission is a nice touch.
The original sticker shows a total sale price of $9,215 along with an average fuel cost that's calculated based on $0.70 / gallon gas. It will be interesting to see what multiple of that original price this one goes for.
These first generation models never had the following of their sportier little brothers, but given some years, we're thinking maybe this Giorgetto Giugiaro design has been the sleeper design-winner all this time.
Put this time capsule on your garage -- it's on sale on eBay in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
