964 targas are rare, and when we do find them they seem to almost always be tiptronics. Given the that, we're happy to find this Porsche that combines the targa top, air cooled motor, 5 speed, and AWD.
The 964's are our favorite of the modern 911's. The streamlined bodystyles, second-to-last generation aircooled engines, ABS, and 959-inspired AWD make for a modern experience while still delivering that raw Porsche-ness that started getting lost in subsequent models. We also like the open-top motoring option the targa provides without the look of the full convertible top.
This 964 in Washington State has only 75k miles, but the sellers description lacks confidence and makes it sound like it's starting to get a little bit tired. A lack of service records is disheartening, especially on pre 1991 964's that lacked seals between the cylinder head and the cylinder. At this point, we assume most 964s on the road have had this addressed, but as always, a PPI is money well spent here.
The interior looks clean and neat, with the only modification being a new radio which looks to be a Blaupunkt, so we approve. The targa top looks to have some staining, but if it still fits well, we'd leave it. The K&N air filter is also a bit of a red flag for us, but maybe that's just a personal thing.
Porsche cup wheels look good here, but we'd probably source some coilovers to replace the HR springs so that we could get a little more clearance and turn this into a 4-season driver. We'd love to see this thing with some 16" steelies and skinny snow tires for winter duty.
We all know that we are in a Porsche bubble so it will be interesting to see where this one ends up at price-wise. 6 years ago, we almost pulled the trigger on a similar hardtop 964 for $19,000. The bidding on this one is at $21,100 with reserve not met and we wouldn't be surprised if the reserve is over 30k.
