I'M SERIOUS, LET'S GET STARTED

The One to Have: 1985 Audi 4000S Quattro

audi, 4000, quattro

Our feelings about the Audi 4000 are no secret so for $6,500 this well preserved example has us calculating shipping costs from Seattle. This 4000 has low miles, looks to be well taken care of, and is nicely optioned. On top of that, the 85's were the first to receive the updated styling that still looks good to this day.

Compared to the optimistically priced GTI that we featured earlier this week, this Audi 4000 seems like a deal with a price of $6,500. The 4000's don't have near the cult status of the early GTI's but maybe they should.

Claimed to have been owned by a German car mechanic, the seller says that this example remains totally stock and we can't see anything that would make us disagree. Other than a (vintage) replacement headunit most everything looks like it did when it left (West) Germany in 1985.

With only 116,000 miles on the clock, our first impression would be that the odometer must be broken, but the condition of everything else supports such low mileage. Paint is shiny, plastics look black and non-faded, and the wheels (which are some of our favorites ever) look to be in great condition.

The real star here is the Quattro system and the seller says it's working great including 2 (!) locking diffs. A strong clutch and smooth transmission are also mentioned along with a "suspension and brakes [that] work as they should." No details are given about service history but we're inclined to give this one the benefit of the doubt based on everything else.

The interior is 1985 fresh and the wear-prone cloth seats still present nicely. The only electrical hiccup mentioned is a slow power window on the passenger's side. If that's the only interior issue on a 30 year old German car that was pretty well loaded, we take that as a win.

Undercarriage shots show an extremely clean vehicle that has either avoided salt, or was obsessively cleaned. Maybe the public works folks in the Pacific Northwest don't bother with salt which would explain both the necessity of this Quattro, and it's cleanliness. Either way, we're jealous as we're still finding salt in Moto Roster's garage in May.

We're trying to figure out how to work this one into our garage, but you can beat us to it by buying this 1985 Audi 4000 on eBay in Seattle, Washington for $6,500.
