A 1991 Range Rover for less than $5,000 conjures images of rust, electrical nightmares, and lots of quality time riding shotgun with your local AAA driver. Even so, we're intrigued by this truck's history, maintenance record, and seemingly straightforward seller.
The "Great Divide" edition was a limited run of 400 trucks that were built to 1990 specs but sold in 1991. They were all white with "Sorrell Brown" interior and in addition to some badges, they received 5 spoke wheels, rear light guards, and an aluminum front bumper with integrated brush guard. The bumper setup eliminated the fog lights and we think it's actually a cleaner look.
A 2 inch Old Man Emu lift kit was installed so that means that the air suspension has been properly abandoned. Wheels have been refinished, and the seller mentions "nice AT tires" but it's hard to tell from photos. The seller says it “runs great” at 80 down the highway which is surprising on a number of fronts.
Claimed to have spent most of its life in the Pacific Northwest prior to heading eastward to Connecticut, the seller says that the only rust present is one small bubble by the license plate. Paint looks flat but clean, and one shot of the underside looks surprisingly fresh.
Inside, things look worn and the missing radio and fuse cover don't add to the ambiance. Looking further the headliner looks to have been replaced somewhat sloppily and the seller mentions needing a sunroof seal so we wonder what that means in terms of leakage.
Additional bits of "character" include a passenger door that doesn't work and a missing handle on the rear hatch. A sub-5k Rover with 150,000 miles on it is a risky choice at best, but we like the fact that the seller claims to have used this as a daily driver for 2 years. Some minor PITA maintenance like hoses and trailing arm bushings are nice signs that this really was gone through for daily service.
We know if this one was a bit closer we'd be checking it out. Anyone in Naugatuck, Connecticut want to be our eyes? Buy this Great Divide for $4,500 on eBay.
