How much is a 300Tdi worth? This 1995 Range Rover looks to be in slightly above average condition, but is commanding top dollar due to a ton of recent work, and more importantly a 300Tdi motor swap. We love these final year Range Rovers, and we love diesels but we're not sure if we love this one $17,000 worth.
The draw here is the 300Tdi which is said to be a "professionally installed turbo diesel conversion w/ appropriate auto transmission" that was put in within the last 5,000 miles. We'd like a bit more detail on the donor motor and transmission in terms of miles, where they came from, etc. The seller seems to be an enthusiast so we're sure it would be easy to reach out and get the story.
The list of recent maintenance is impressive even without the new engine. Some of the work like, new belts + tensioners, hoses, AC compressor, fuel tank, and more would all be necessitated by the new motor. Others like new BFGs, an Old Man Emu spring conversion, and stainless brake lines are all nice to have as well (though we consider the spring coversion to be a necessity as well). A treatment of Waxoyl is a nice British touch.
Outside, things are in good original condition with the usual bumps and bruises. Some rust is present around the rear taillights and bumper, and repairs were made to both the driver and passenger footwells. The rear window frame is said to be solid so we wonder if there was a previous repair there given the corrosion around the bumper. All together, we'd say it's a solid B all around on the outside and in great "drive it" condition.
All of that is great, and the truck sounds solid. The list of "quirks" though, while not at all unusual, does give us some pause when combined with a starting bid of $17,000 and a Buy it Now price of $22,500. A few electrical gremlins like non-op cruise control and active SRS & ABS warning lights are a bit worrisome. Non functioning heated seats, driver's seat controls, side mirrors, and rear defroster aren't big deals, but cumulatively make us worry about the history of this truck. Similarly, unwired fog lights make us question how they came to be that way -- they were wired, what happened?
A slow to shift when cold transmission should be alleviated by a fluid flush, but if the transmission was just installed 5,000 miles ago, it could be something else.
Calling out electrical issues and the transmission may seem nitpicky, and we don't mean to come off that way. On a $5,000 Range Rover, none of that even raises an eyebrow, but we'd expect a bit more for this price. Is the diesel motor worth a 10k premium? Without more info about the motor, as much as it pains us to say, we'd pass on this truck at the current price. The fact that it's been on eBay for a few days with no bids seems to reaffirm that.
That said, if this thing slips to under $10,000, all of those issues start to fade into the background for us. Find this Oil Burning Rover on eBay in Eads, TN.
