Our preferences for oddball 4x4s usually tend toward Rovers and FJs but there's something to be said for some good old American engineering. With prices increasing on CJ-8's across the board, this $6,900 runner could be a great chance to get into something you can drive and sort as you go.
This 1982 Scambler is on offer on eBay in Jonesboro, Illinois. The seller claims that the main needs are paint and interior, saying that it "runs and drives well" and is solid underneath. A remanufactured carb, new battery, and waterpump are all part of a recent tune up. The super swampers are said to have flat spots that are smoothing out, but we'd probably get something a bit less aggressive on there.
Shots of the undercarriage show expected corrosion but nothing too serious. It's a little tough to tell though as there seems to be shots of the underside of two different vehicles included in this auction. Floor holes appear to be mainly purposeful and of the drainage variety.
Paint and interior are the seller's main claims in terms of needs. We'd address any exterior rust issues as needed but leave things as-is in the paint department. Panels look straight, and aftermarket bumpers and tow bars look to be high quality. The interior needs some cleaning and seat covers, but we don't think it's far off from providing the needed utility.
These Scramblers are interesting vehicles that provide a bit of pickup utility along with a unique look. Restored examples are commanding over 20K, and an FJ45 pickup in similar condition (if you could find one) would be 3x as much. A $6,900 buy it now is realistic -- we'd be very interested at $4,500.
