This 2002 has been kicking around on eBay for a while now and has been sitting even longer. It's rough around the edges (and the non-edges too), but with no reserve, a starting bid of $2,002, and a buy it now of $5,000 it could be worth the risk to get a 2002 into the garage. And, it's orange!
If you were to make a list of pros and cons for this car and make a practical, well reasoned decision, it would be a no every time. That said, there aren't too many practical reasons to buy a 40 year old BMW so let's keep our rose colored glasses on.
The car, as it sits, is not running. The seller says it turns over and probably needs some carb work from sitting. Who doesn't like a challenge? It was a daily driver and there's no reason to think that it couldn't be one again.
It has some baubles that we're not stoked on: some paint on the engine, non-working yellow lights, and an "ooga horn" but those can be remedied easily. We'd have to check out the bullet mirrors in person before we decide on those. We do like the newly "done up" front seats and exhaust.
Nof for the really bad: there is diamond plate in the trunk that is a result of rust from "wet fishing equipment" being stored in there. We can believe that leaving salt water soaked equipment in the trunk would be an aggressive rust agent, we're not sure that diamond plate is the remedy though.
Maybe our 912 hunt has jaded us to what bad rust is, but if it's non structural in the trunk it doesn't seem so bad for what we'd do with this car.. In the "pro" column, the strut towers do look to be rust free and it has a "newer" gas tank as well.
The wheels currently on the car are not included, but we're ok with the original steel wheels being swapped back in. We would imagine that new tires will be needed as well. The seller mentions that his intention was to rebuild the motor and transmission so we'd be interested in how necessary that is at the moment.
We know it could be a nightmare, but we keep thinking "an orange 2002 for less than 5k" which is a powerful thought. If we were in Florida we'd be checking this thing out with cash in our pocket to see if it could be turned into a driver with minimal effort and money,
