We like everything about this FJ resto mod: from the PPG paint to the 3.9 liter Cummins diesel and everything in between. It looks like an incredibly solid build while not being over the top or too nice to use. No doubt this rig is beyond our budget, but we like its usability and stock look over some other "iconic" vehicles.
The only thing that strikes us as odd about this build is that it's based on a 1971 model so it doesn't have the ambulance doors that are our preference. Lack of ambulance doors notwithstanding, the builder claims that it was a solid base to build from, and build they did.
The big seller here is the Cummins 4BT diesel motor mated to a NV4500 5 speed. The seller claims 180 HP with the HX35 turbo which strikes us as a bit high based on stock 4BT specs but whatever that number is, the setup provides a huge upgrade over the stock gas motor in terms of power and torque.
The conversion cost $25,000 and was "tuned to perfection by a world renowned diesel mechanic here in Denver, no black smoke and starts in seconds." We'd be interested in the age of the motor as well as getting some details about the new transfer case.
Additional enhancements include disc brakes (we're assuming all around), new wiring, a new exhaust, and good looking BFG KM2's over the original steel wheels. A 2 inch Old Man Emu lift accomodates the 31 inch tires though the seller's claim of an $8,500 price tag for "ride and comfort" strikes us as both high and off as OME lifts never ranked high on the comfort scale for us.
Outside the "Scanda Blue" paint is a favorite, or near match of a favorite on these FJ's with white roofs. All new upholstery inside looks good up front with a 3-across setup and maybe a little too authentic in the back where things look a bit baggy. We'd be interested how old the paint work is as there is some slight wear and corrosion showing on internal metal edges.
The dash looks clean and age-appropriate which we dig -- neat but not new or too clean. That's the general vibe of this truck, it's a great build but not too nice to actually use as a daily driver. The rigs that the Icon boys put out are impressive, but they somehow aren't even trucks by the time they're done with them. This one is still a truck and can be used like one, if you've got the cash to play.
