We were always happy to see a G-Class running around in the 80s and 90s knowing that someone went through a lot of trouble (and expense) to get it here. That was the back when these things were for eccentrics and fanatics, not wealthy soccer moms and celebrities.
This 1987 300GD has a clear NJ title and if we were to guess, we'd say it's a recent import and not a grey market survivor. We see another G class peeking out in some of the photos so the seller may be an importer, or just an enthusiast. Either way, and however / whenever it got here, it checks all of the boxes for us.
A straight six diesel mated to a 5-speed manual is a dream setup, though the seller rightfully notes it's not the fastest combination when motivating this much mass. That motor was sold in the US in a few turbocharged variations so it may be possible to squeeze a bit more out of it, but you shouldn't. What it really means is that parts for the motor might not be too bad to get stateside. The transmission and diffs though may be a different story.
Low miles show on the clean interior which is about as German as things get. Standard Mercedes buckets are straight out of any 80s Merc and look much harsher than they are. Subtle plaid on the door cards is a nice touch on an otherwise menacing vehicle. The seller lists the paint as black, but the photos read charcoal to us which we hope it is.
Though we love the uniqueness of the 2-doors and convertible versions, the 4-door is the way to go in terms of practicality. We're already making plans to have some friends in NJ check this one out, but our only minor concerns are with a hole in the dash along with a mystery switch. Our guess would be for accessory lighting, or perhaps a winch at some point. Not a big deal so long as the electrical remains generally unmessed-with.
If this was on our roster, our target price would be $15k, but we expect one in this condition to approach $25k for the right buyer. Check out the eBay Auction with 6 days remaining and what we expect to be brisk bidding.
