Continuing the search for the 912 that’s at the top of our roster, we’re checking in on what’s out there in the current market. We are starting to see some more reasomable prices popping up which is promising. Could this 1968 912 driver on offer for $26,500 in Daytona Beach, Florida be the one?
Claimed to have recently come out of long term ownership, this originally Bahama Yellow coupe has a driver quality red respray that looks presentable in photos. No COA is mentioned, but photos back up matching numbers along with an engine in the proper range for a 68. The desirable 5 speed is a nice addition. The seller has this 912 running as evidenced by a video and things sound acceptable in terms of odd noises, but the entire car will need to be gone through as it has sat for some time.
The interior looks great with the exception of a head unit and speakers behind the front seats. The seats present as original, and the floor has been recovered with a period appropriate gray carpet.
Speaking of the floors, they're always a weak point on any unrestored 912 and we generally go in thinking that they'll need to be replaced. This one had a fiberglass coating applied at some point in an effort to get some more life out of the original floor. It's an interesting technique that isn't seen too much any more and is really only appropriate for the front floorboards. The seller acknowledges that this is a temporary solution and the floors will need to be addressed in the future.
This 912 looks nice (maybe too nice) and we're drawn to the condition of the interior. We’d easily trade the shiny respray for sound floorboards, or a sorted brake and electrical system. It previously sold at auction for $25,000 so we've got our ceiling set. If you told us you picked this up for $21,000 we'd be jealous. That said, we still feel like things are starting to deflate, so in a year we'd be surprised if this is a $20,000 car. That’s the tricky part of negotiating a bubble like this -- if you want the car, you’re going to pay the money, but these aren’t the appreciating assets everyone seems to think that they are.
