We've always liked the quirky styling of the US Fox 2 door wagons. This UK born 1989 VW Polo is a rare sight on our shores and ups the quirkiness factor on all fronts.
With a nearly vertical rear window, and bodywork stretched as far as possible over a tiny wheelbase, we guess that this is technically a hatchback but that doesn't seem to adequately describe things. The rear view still feels like an evolution of car design that we never actually got to explore. With a few more embellishments this could have been a pizza delivery car in Back to the Future 2.
Four light, GTI-style headlights look sharp and are a nice aesthetic (and functional) upgrade. Make no mistake about GTI performance though -- there's nothing hot about this hatch. A 1 liter engine, mated to a 4 speed is fine for around town, but getting up to speed on the highway will be an exercise in patience. Combine the measured-in minutes performance with a RHD setup and day to day driving may take some concentration.
The interior is in great shape after less than 90k miles. We're never happy to see an aftermarket sunroof but there's so much glass on this thing already, a little more on the roof doesn't hurt.
Currently on eBay with Buy It Now of $5,750, you're paying for the uniqueness and rarity in the US, not condition. If weird watercooled VWs are your thing, this could be an interesting driver to add to your collection.
