Badges on car grills have always been a subtle mode of communication amongst automobile enthusiasts. Whether a badge signifies membership in a particular car club, racing history, or simply ultra-high mileage, it provides immediate insight about a car and its owner to those in the know.

Moto Roster is updating this idea by creating custom “Internet of Things” grill badges for its members. In addition to providing a visual cue about Moto Roster membership, these “connected” badges also broadcast info about a car and its owner to fellow Moto Roster members out on the road.

Using the Google-backed “Physical Web” standard, anyone who spots a Moto Roster badge on a car can simply pull out their phone and instantly learn more about the car they’re looking at and it’s owner.

How it Works
When someone signs up for Moto Roster they are able to order their own grill badge. We securely embed that member’s unique ID into the badge, pack it up, and ship it out. The owner mounts their new badge onto the grill of their car and they’re good to go. Anytime someone see the badge, they just pull out their phone and are instantly presented with the member’s Moto Roster page.

Tech
The badges are inspired by the size and shape of traditional European car club badges but the style is the only thing traditional about them. Each badge is 3D printed and then hand finished and assembled. Inside of the badge is an Eddystone compatible bluetooth beacon that is designed for long life and reliability.
