The seller of this 1978 Austin Mini needs to make room (and likely free up cash) for his newly purchased Caterham 7. Said to have been restored over the last decade, the seller of this Mini made some choices that we personally don't love, but those are overshadowed by the ones that we do. 1275cc and coilovers anyone?
The seller is heavy on photos and light on mechanical description but we want to give him the benefit of the doubt. Anyone who has spent 10 years working on an Austin in Cincinnati, Ohio and then decides to buy a Caterham earns our respect.
Without a doubt, this Mini looks great on the inside with an almost too nice paint job and shiny new chrome. We'd lose all of the decals but we do love the rally-style reverse light on the back and leather-strapped spec lights up front.
The interior looks to be nicely executed if perhaps not to our taste. It would be a shame to replace a near-new interior but we'd see about fitting aluminum in place of all of the wood. The seats and their upholstery seem to be out of a 90's vintage Mini and we'd have to see how they feel before deciding whether to reupholster or replace with something more period. Either way, black vinyl is in order (in our minds).
The real draw for us is everything that's going on underneath. The motor has been upgraded to a 1275cc unit with a 1.75" SU carb and stainless exhaust. No mention is made about what path was taken to reach 1275cc, as there are several, so some more discussion is in order. No mention is made of the transmission in terms of upgrades or changes from stock form.
10 inch Minilite inspired wheels combined with height adjustable coilovers should provide for lots of fun, Disc brakes up front should help when a little bit too much fun is had.
This car looks great and is claimed to be rust free. Digging deeper, we'd like to know a little bit more about the mechanicals as it seems like it has all the right stuff, it's just a question of whether it was all executed correctly. If the detail paid to the outside of the car is reflective of everything else, this could be a winner.
This Mini is on eBay with a buy it now of $17,000 and reserve not yet met. The BIN price strikes us as a bit dear, but a test drive might convince us that it's not too far off.
