If you're looking to haul 6 people as well as an additional 3,000 pounds, this 1988 Chevy 3+3 should fit your needs nicely. Converted to a 6.5L Detroit Diesel and sitting on a lowered (or shot?) suspension, this unique ex-military truck could still have lots of service left in her.
There's not a lot of information given by the seller other than mentioning the stock 6.2L motor being replaced by the 6.5L Detroit unit, and some shots of a government ID tag. We're speculating that the Detroit motor was put in to make for consistent service with the rest of the motor pool since those bigger engines would have been common in AM General Humvees. If the swap were done after the truck had been released to the civilian population, we assume that the turbo unit would have been fitted.
We're not sure if the mileage has rolled over, if that's the mileage on the new motor, or if it's just extremely low and it never left the base. The photos are just rough enough that it could have been either. Maybe it was babied for 100,000 miles, or beat up for 4,500.
Even with the thirsty motor, the dual fuel tanks allow for up to 40 gallons to be carried making for a more than adequate daily range. The automatic makes the 3+3 seating more feasible, if still a bit friendlier than some may feel comfortable with. That said, the combination of a roomy crew cab, 8 foot bed, and low loading height make this truck more practical than many of the jacked-up trucks on the road today.
Combine those stats with the in all ways competent Detroit Diesel and this is a real work truck that can do just about anything that you ask of it. The mismatched tires don’t inspire a lot of confidence but they’re at least new. We’d be interested to see what’s going on with the suspension and how much cargo capacity has been compromised.
Other than that, we’d love to have this as a shop truck / toy hauler / parking lot menace.
