In addition to writing about cars, write code here in the Moto Roster garage (that's what pays the bills and lets us buy cars). While we love searching for cars, we've been working on some tools that will let us find more interesting cars, from more sources, with less effort. They're still a work in progress but we're getting results. Here's an example of one that bubbled up: a 1951 Willys Wagon
This 1951 Willys Wagon has an interesting proto-adventure vibe that we dig. We could see this truck bouncing up fire roads in Yosemite or Yellowstone in the 50's. And, though we think he prefered Pontiac's and IH's, we think the rack would have provided a nice base for Ansel Adam's tripod.
Setting that nostalgia aside, whatever this truck did in a past life, there isn't a lot of originality left. A SBC V8 is mated to a 4-speed manual and four wheel drive is still intact. Guessing by the levers in the cockpit, the original 4WD system has been mated with the updated drivetrain but that could be a red herring. A dual exhaust doesn't sound overpowering in the included YouTube clip.
A good deal of attention has been paid to the interior. Good parts include a unique wood veneer headliner that looks neat enough and a tidy stainless dash holding all of the modern instrumentation. On the flip side, abundant shag carpeting covers vast expanses of real estate, including the doors. We'd take the floor down to bare metal and fit some wood veneer to the door if the headliner work was worth keeping.
Claimed to be rust free, the few undercarriage shots support that claim, and flat tan paint looks good flanked by black steel bumpers. Find this Willys Wagon on Craislist in Tuscon, AZ for $8,500.
This is our first feature vehicle that our custom code found, ranked, and scored highly enough to report to us. It's just a start but we're excited to see how things develop and if we can put our code to work crawling cars 24/7. If you're interested in what we're doing on that front, or want to put the code to work searching for cars you like, get in touch.
