There are lots of custom VW communities out there. This Vanagon embraces all of them. You've got your Baja Bug guys, your Adventure Vanagon guys, your slammed bus guys, your hot-rod drag Bug guys. Usually those communities stay pretty distinct. That's not the case in Newman Lake, Washington where this 1980 Vanagon has crossed all borders to become something we can't help but love.
Starting with a 1980 Vanagon, it has been chopped and welded into a double cab configuration, while still maintaining a working tailgate that opens into the bed of the truck. That's all fine, and has been done before.
It gets interesting outback where a 2.5RS Subaru motor is hanging off the bumper like a mix between a Baja Bug and a Abarth tuned engine from the 1960's that prevented the deck lid from closing.
While there is lots of work to be done, some of the thought that went into this build makes us think it's less of a hack job than it might appear at first glance. An aluminum radiator lives under the "bed" along side a compressor for the air ride suspension.
We'd probably need to fabricate some kind of bumper or cage around the engine to protect the unweary and to satisfy the state of PA, but if that's all it took, we would proudly have this thing stationed at Moto Roster HQ. The interior an afterthought but the Kenworth truck mats fit the vibe perfectly. We can imagine the Cars and Coffee guys shaking their heads when they hear us coming 2 miles away.
