Though we've heard nothing but nightmare stories about these Costa Rican imports, this diesel Land Cruiser in South Carolina has us contemplating making some rash decisions. No reserve auctions with 0 bids and 2 hours left tend to do that when they involve vintage Japanese 4x4’s.
We've definitely got rose-colored glasses on for this one as we have been missing the BJ40 that used to call our garage home. The school bus yellow respray and the chrome bumpers / trim aren't our first choices, but we like just about everything else including the ambulance doors, stock ride height, and of course the motor.
Videos show a smooth (or as smooth as can be expected) running motor along with a working front diff and hubs. Other videos show some "possible bondo" on the floor boards which is a dicey proposition and almost certainly true if the seller points it out. Shots of the frame however look clean without being suspiciously so.
The seller notes that this particular truck doesn't have a heater which sounds odd if not impossible to us. Shots of the interior show coolant hoses running up to the dash so we're wondering why and how the heater was "removed." We're guessing that the hoses are just shunted together avoiding the core and hopefully it wouldn't take much to get (at least some) heat in here again.
We're ignoring the agricultural driving experience and minute-hand acceleration of these trucks and focusing on our fond memories of them while we're reading this listing. With a $13,500 opening bid and no reserve, it's not necessarily an obvious steal but it could be a solid deal if the paint is not hiding anything scary and the motor hasn't suffered too much neglect.
We're going to stay away from eBay for the next 2 hours so that we don't make a rash bid, but you, dear readers, should by all means buy this truck and let us know how it goes.
