This low mileage 1993 Volkswagen Corrado would have been the pinnacle of our high school VW aspirations. The VR6 paired with the Corrado's funky styling and 90's preferred green on tan color scheme are more than enough for us to ignore the horrible automatic seatbelts.
There's some disparity between the mileage stated in the listing and shown on the odometer, but let's call it 80k miles to be safe. Either way, it's still very low for this penultimate Corrado model and a $6,500 asking price doesn't seem out of the question if some records and a test drive give it a clean bill of health. The VR6 would be our preference over the 8 valve supercharged G60 both for a bit more power as well as somewhat easier parts availability.
Green on tan would have been nearing peak demand at the BMW dealer in 1993 so this "Sport Luxury Coupe" from VW would have been right in line to follow the trend. The seller downplays the condition of the paint and leather, but they look original and well kept in the somewhat shadowy photos. A non-leaking sunroof is a nice add on, and we superficially hope that the speed-activated rear spoiler is still functional.
Speedline wheels are an appropriate choice for this budget coupe, and tires look new. The aftermarket wooden shift knob pushes the "luxury coupe" idea a bit too far and would have to go, but other than that we'd drive it as is.
When in development, these were supposedly considered as a 944 replacement. We're not sure if there were any plans for a drive shaft and RWD, or they were always to be FWD fighters, but the comparison is still interesting now when looking for a budget sporty coupe. For $6,500 you could have your choice of older 944's, or maybe find a shabby but serviceable 951. For the money, the Corrado is faster than the NA 944, almost as fast as the turbo ,and probably a more unique car in terms of production numbers.
This one isn't far from Moto Roster HQ and we'd like to check it out and talk to the seller. The photos include not only the Corrado, but what looks to be a 90's Dodge Stealth and a VW Thing both wrapped in plastic, and a partially assembled lift. Whatever this guy's got going on, we like his style.
