We remember when the R32 came out in Europe and eventually made its way to the US a few years later. With AWD and the VR6 it was our dream VW made real. At the time the near $30,000 sticker price was a bit of a deal breaker for us, not to mention the fact that the allotment of 5,000 vehicles sold out extremely quickly. 13 years and 400,000 miles later, this R32 has has lost about 80% of it's retail price but our interest remains at 110%.
This R32 has covered an impressive 399,767 miles and according to the seller all of those were covered by a single owner. We can't imagine being that owner and not putting on another 233 miles to tick the clock over the 400,000 mark before selling but who knows what came up.
At this mileage, the interior looks a bit worse for the wear but outside we're impressed with how things have held up. Some dents and dings and a bit of rust are present but it doesn’t look like it’s seen a mile over 250,000.
An extensive Carfax shows that this car spent most of its time in Maryland and received a good deal of service at VW dealers. At this mileage, hard and fast rules about "watch out for X" on these cars sort of go out the window. We'd be satisfied to let sleeping dogs lie in the motor and just continue to change oil and belts as needed.
We're tempted to turn this into a modern day Golf Country by fitting some bigger tires, jacking up the suspension and having at it. Maybe see if we can pick up some modern plaid GTI seats to replace the tired Recaros in this one and have all the makings of our dream (Frankenstein) GTI.
Find this R32 on eBay in Knoxville, TN unless we buy it first.
