The E39's are some of our favorite 5 Series BMWs and this one is even more appealing with the big V8 and 6 speed transmission. The fact that it's finished in 90's perfect Oxford Green (they couldn't call it British Racing Green) makes it even better. Add a low price tag and a location only 15 minutes from Moto Roster HQ and we might have to find some space in the garage.
This 1998 BMW 540i is on its second owner who has had it for the last 10 years and 90,000 miles. It comes with lots of extras, some nice upgrades, and looks to be in sharp condition. 10 years of receipts and maintenance notes are included and we'd love to thumb through those.
Original equipment includes heated sports seats and steering wheel, airbags up front, and what looks to be a deleted sunroof. This smells like special order to us with some "stripper" features inside but the big motor and 6-speed. We like it.
By way of issues, the seller mentions some rust along the bottom of the driver's side door which is common in Pittsburgh after you scrape it a few times on a curb -- a situation only made worse by H&R springs but we'll deal with it. Also mentioned are some welded on catalytic converters that occasionally cause a CEL on the highway. We're not as concerned with the CEL as possible high temperature cat's causing trouble under there.
A long list of upgrades include M5 wheels with BFG G-Force tires (the original wheels are included with snow tires), xenon lights from a 2000 M5, H&R springs with Bilstein shocks, and a BMW ZHP "M" weighted shift knob with OE 545i shift lever. A knock off M5 front bumper cover looks nicely installed and we don't mind it along with the M5 wheels, just as long as there's no M5 badge on there.
Paint looks impressively nice in the photos, so much so that we wonder if the entire car didn't get a respray when the new bumper was fitted. The few interior shots show a worn but neat interior and most importantly, that 6 speed.
This car is available on Craigslist in Pittsburgh for $3,200 as is OR only $2,600 without the M5 wheels. That seems like crazy low money for this car, with current PA inspection. If the rust isn't too bad this seems like an easy buy -- maybe we could squeeze one more car in the driveway.
