Normally we think of these big COE trucks handling dirty, heavy duty tasks like hauling cars, or towing other trucks. This one was built for a more genteel and learned, but equally taxing job: hauling around a few tons of books and their biblio-related accoutrements.
The interior is in rough shape, but it doesn't take much to imagine how it looked when new. Some built in bookshelves remain, and what looks to be a librarian's check out desk is still present beside the rear door. Lots of lights and multiple skylights would have made this a great miniature-scale library, and being able to roll down the road with the windows open would have kept the smell of musty books to a minimum.
No specifics are given, and we're having trouble putting our finger on the exact specs of this GMC. We would guess that this is one of the bigger 450's or 470's but the 6 cylinder points to the 350 2-ton model. It would be pretty easy to max out that capacity, but the narrow looking front axle lends more credence to the 350 theory. We're sure a true GMC COE aficionado could ID this from 100 yards without issue.
Some work needs to go into this, and the only brake available at the moment is the E-brake so some hauling is necessary, At least the engine runs and this can move under its own power over short distances which is a big bonus for a rig of this size.
The appropriateness of a $9,800 buy it now price depends on how much it would take to get this thing on the road. If the engine needs minimal work, and brakes are the only issue, this thing could be awesome with a little work and a lot of cleaning. It could make a great track-day hauler or mobile garage and we also like idea of making it a food truck with its own cafe seating inside. Or, fill this thing with books again and become the bibliosoph you've always wanted to be.
