This 1972 BMW 2002 is beyond rough around the edges, but it's described in no uncertain terms as a runner. It has been kicking around eBay for a few weeks now, and we're tempted to see how flexible the seller is on price.
In terms of positives, the seller lists 62,159 miles and makes no mention of a broken odometer. If that mileage is true, they were hard miles as the "patina" (ugh) is impressive. Trim is missing, paint runs the gamut from faded to non-existent, and the rear fenders look to have worn flares at some point that have since been removed.
E21 wheels are a nice touch, if somewhat limiting in terms of tires and suspension options. Round tail lights and slim bumpers are help us to ignore some of the many flaws, even if those bumpers have seen some action as these have. We’d never say no to Hella fogs.
Under the hood, things look a little interesting. Minor things like painted battery cables jump out as odd and the radiator seems to be a non-standard replacement. A Weber carb is a nice to have in terms of reliability and performance. No mention is made as to how long it has been with the car.
Inside, even the sheepskin covers look well worn so we're curious about the condition of things under them -- and even more curious about these 62k miles on the clock. Beyond cosmetics, there is some intense looking metal work shown on the driver's floor near the pedal cluster that we can't quite wrap our heads around.
Other interior shots show a used, but not visibly rusty car in the usual problem spots.
This car is on eBay in Martinsburg, West Virginia with an unmet starting bid of $6,500. That's too much, but if this is truly a runner and the seller could be tempted to part with it for $4,000, it becomes an interesting proposition.
We can't help feeling 5 or 10 years from now we'll be saying "I remember when you could pick up a driver 2002 for 5k." As we continue our illadvised search for a 912 in a P-Car bubble, we can't help but compare this 2002 to this similarly paint-challenged 912 with a VW engine on offer for nearly 4x the price. We have no doubt the 2002 could provide way more smiles-per-dollar.
