With the weather turning cooler and leaves starting to fall, our fancy as of late has tended towards trucks and "traditional" AWD powerhouses. As one may expect in Northeastern climates, the prices on those vehicles go up accordingly as the fall turns into winter. The smart bet financially is to find "summer" cars that are about to be mothballed for the winter and whose owners may be tempted to part for them at a less-than-premium price. This 911 has the makings of a "summer" car, but its Michigan roots are hiding some winter prowess.
These Porsche 996's continue to be unloved and as a result a tremendous value. This one has everything you could want including all wheel drive, unique Vesuvio Grey paint, the much-hyped IMS replacement, and low-ish miles. Bidding has just begun on this 2 owner 911 but, if history is any indication, someone will get a deal on a 300HP AWD Porsche.
The original sticker is included and shoes a list price of nearly $90,000 when new which includes over $15,000 of options.
With its AWD, this vehicle won't get you a huge "winter in Michigan" discount price, but the local market in Ann Arbor can't be clamoring for sports cars with 3 inches of ground clearance as winter approaches.
That said, we like that this one has an extra set of 16 inch wheels that appear to have snow tires mounted on them which is exactly what our plan would be for a car of this nature. It's not going to be a lot of use when there is 8 inches of snow out there, but then again not many cars would be.
The Vesuvio Grey paint looks to be in great shape so we're not sure if this car actually saw much winter duty, but the driver in us hopes that it did. We'd love to talk to the current owner about his experience with it through Michigan winters, but we don't want our dreams of having a 4-season Porsche coupe dashed by the harsh reality of real life.
This one won't be a super deal, but given the current market for these it should be a good deal. For a real pre-winter steal we'd be looking for a C2 with higher mileage, no IMS service and a North / Northeastern locale but we put this one on our watch list anyway just to torture ourselves.
