This 1991 Porsche 944 S2 has is interesting on a number of levels beyond the 16v 'Ventiler' motor. It has rare-ish paint, an interesting option package with sunroof and cruise control delete, and a 968 spoiler. On top of all that, it spent most of its live in Japan and now resides on Mercer Island, WA.
First off, on a superficial note, we have always loved the 968 spoilers and we flirted briefly with installing an aftermarket conversion kit when we had a 944 in the garage. This one looks very well executed and it has us wondering whether it was an option that we forgot about on the S2, or maybe the Japanese market got some special customizations before Porsche got its dealer network established there?
Even though you can probably get more HP for less money with a 951, we would love an S2 as a daily driver with its usable low end torque and linear power curve. This one is nicely optioned with a deleted sunroof and the M474 suspension package.
Though it has recently received a "trip inspection" by a local Porsche specialist and received a clean enough bill of health, not many specifics are given as to maintenance history. One new control arm and some bushings are mentioned as new, but no word on everyone's favorite 944 topic: the timing belt.
This car looks well kept and all of the tool kits / little bits are still in place so we would think that the owner likely kept detailed service records but we imagine that they're in Japanese so it might take some work to decypher them.
We like the crystal silver metallic paint which is rarely seen on these front-engined P-cars and the seller says there are some scratches and haze but he thinks that they could be buffed out. The front valence and headlight covers have been repainted and look well matched in the provided photos.
The interior looks great and we're always fans of the cloth / script inserts. Without the sunroof to break it up, the headliner looks especially nice too.
It seems like the seller has done most of the leg work getting this car here and through customs, but it will be up to the buyer to complete the task of getting a title. We'd think the seller would go ahead and do that in order to command a bit more on price so hopefully there's no issue there.
We'll be interested to see what this one sells for as it has a unique mix of rare options, high-ish miles, and good condition. We imagine it won't be a "deal" as the seller just paid to have it shipped across the Pacific, but it could be an interesting driver and investment as 944 prices slowly rise and this one enjoys rarity amongst its more common brethren.
