Putting a luxury, diesel, coupe in your line up is probably a tough sell for an automaker selling cars in the US in 2016. In 1983 however, it only stood to reason that Mercedes Benz would offer their W123 "executive" car in every conceivable body and engine combination. So, while the we normally see the diesels in the wagons, we're glad someone ordered this one wrapped in a coupe.
This particular coupe seems to have ran into some trouble in Alabama around 1994 at which time it received a salvage title. Since then it has picked up another 100,000 miles so, while we're sure it's not all rainbows and puppies, we're hoping that the incident was minor enough and / or the repair of high enough quality that it's not a huge issue.
Ignoring for now what may lurk beneath, the car looks good with a recent repaint that is more than serviceable. The blue color has the added bonus of being dark enough to help mask the unsightly US-spec bumpers. As always, we’re leery of any car being sold “a few months” after being painted.
Inside, the blue continues with our favorite MB-Tex which appears to be in good condition based on the limited photos, though the seller describes it as only "ok." We're not sure if it's the color contrast, or just the vehicle and all that it brings but this is one of the few interiors where we like the "wood" trim.
The ad has few details other than claiming the exterior and interior to be "rust free and in great shape." The seller also trots out the "200k is nothing on these engines" line which can be true, depending on the conditions under which those miles are accumulated.
We normally like our Benzes with a slick top or a G in front of them, but this coupe brings a smile to our face. If we were outfitting a teen driver, and this one passed all necessary safety checks, it could a strong contender. Lots of German steel and a 0 to 60 time of "yes" (even with the turbo) would be a good intro to the road while providing a great education as to the quirks of the German automakers in the 80's.
