We don't see too many manual Mercedes wagons on our shores, let alone one with less than 40,000 miles on it. This nicely specced 1983 230TE was imported last year and looks neat and tidy. This is our second petrol Mercedes in as many days but this low mileage wagon is more than worth it.
This wagon has the same motor as the 230GE that we just featured, but the wagon is a much more appealing package to us. The 4WD of the G is great, but as a practical daily driver we'd take this one in a second.
With a 4-speed, AC, a sunroof, and power locks this wagon is very nicely optioned. Claimed to be garage kept, the paint looks to be in good original condition, and the small Euro bumpers give this wagon a streamlined look. Adding to the European feel are the rear fog light and offset reverse light.
The interior looks neat with the wear-prone fabric seats still showing nicely. Minimal wood trim looks understated next to a clean dash and the console offers ample cassette storage. The seller has gone through the trouble of swapping out the metric speedometer with one reading in miles. We're not sure if that was required to get a NJ title (we don't think so), or done to replace a non-functioning speedo, or just due to a thorough owner.
In addition to the low mileage, and the Euro touches, the 4-speed is the real draw here. The 230 is a great motor, even if the seller disparages our much loved 3.0 diesel. Combined with the manual, we'd love to have this as a daily driver in our fleet.
