Thinking about a privateer Dakar campaign and need a vehicle to support the effort? Looking for the right base for your ultimate overland RV? Tired of needing to haul 5 or 6 tons of cargo through blizzard conditions and not having a vehicle that's up to the task? We've got just the vehicle for you.
We're always interested in these rare (to us) German municipal vehicles that find their way to our shores. They're usually low mileage, well kept, and generally semi-bonkers. This 1984 MAN G Series is no exception with only 10k miles on the clock and looking like it's ready for just about anything.
Built on the Volkswagen LT chassis, this truck gets beefed up to a length of 22 feet, has permanent 4 wheel drive, and is powered by a 5.6 liter straight 6 diesel. A 5 speed will help make use of all 136 horsepower, but we wouldn't be too interested in top speed. The seller mentions differential brakes so things may take a bit of getting used, but it would be a worthy skill to master when this rig is loaded down.
The custom body looks too nice to replace so hopefully the buyer can repurpose it as-is, but the storage areas on all sides don't leave room for any large items, so some reconfiguration may be necessary. Some pumping equipment looks to remain in the body so that’s probably a good candidate to remove and free up some space.
The 6-light layout upfront looks mean, and sets this truck apart from the more common highway hauler configurations. Billed as a "rescue vehicle" it's got some interesting heavy duty additions including a 10 ton winch and two 1,000 watt lights that can be raised up to 15 feet on a hand cranked boom. They're powered by an internal generator and would offer plenty of light for night time repairs -- whether on the Baja 500 trail, or a 24 hours of LeMons parking lot.
We'd like to know how this ended up in Iron River, MI but we're glad it did, and that it's available on eBay now.
