We've been wanting to feature a 944 on MR for a while now. While we would prefer a 951 hardtop for PCA playdates, this clean final year cabriolet could serve nicely.
There were only about 500 S2 cabriolets that made it to the USA in 1991 so you're unlikely to be flashing your pop-up lights at another on your way to the grocery store.
This low mileage example is offered by a seemingly (and admittedly) unknowledgeable seller but if you're not far from Port Washington, NY we think it's worth checking out. Some rust is mentioned, and a history in Iowa as well as New York gives us some pause. As does the missing hood badge. However, the flawless looking interior and unblemished wheels are first pass indicators of a well taken care of vehicle.
What look to be adjustable shocks are visible in the engine photos, but no mention is made of them in the listing. An aftermarket top looks presentable, but the rear window points to a non-expert installation. The seller states that has can't get the top down so either budget for a new motor (and troubleshooting) or plan on having a manual top.
We love 944s and with their prices seemingly at absolute bottom, we are half considering buying every sub-$2500 one we can find and putting them in dry storage for 20 years. This one, with it's biggest of the bunch final year engine is an eclectic model and the drop top could appeal to the right buyer.
No reserve bidding is at $4,950 with about a day to go. We'd go that much sight unseen -- a bit more if it has the optional ABS, or if an in person inspection revealed alleviated some concerns.
