This Land Rover has the makings of a "best of both worlds"-mobile. It combines the ruggedness (hello exposed door hinges) of the early US Range Rovers with a rebuilt 4.2 liter V8 from a newer truck. It's currently on offer by the owner of a Land Rover restoration shop in Scottsdale and we'd be eager to see what a rig like this sells for.
The truck spent its life in Oregon before heading to the Arizona desert last year. After 170,000 miles, the original 3.5 liter motor was "on its last leg." A 4.2 motor from a 1995 LWB was rebuilt and installed with what sounds to be a high degree of care.
These pre-89 Rovers are much closer to their utilitarian European roots lacking complication s like ABS, troublesome air suspensions, and chain driven Borg Werner transfer cases.
Beyond the new motor, there's an extensive list of recent service and upgrades. Bigger calipers with vented rotors, a radiator with an integrated oil cooler from a Discovery, black steel wheels with Goodyear MT's, and an OME lift and shocks are all nice additions.
Service includes a transmission and brake flush along with fresh fluid in all of the diffs and transfer case. New wheel bearings up front and recently serviced front swivel housings are nice to see in conjunction with the OME suspension work.
On the inside, things look as to be expected for a 30 year old truck. A new headliner makes a big difference and the seller points out a few minor flaws.
We like the combination of neat-but-used anesthetics combined with fresh and upgraded mechanicals. The seller seems to have done a quality job on all of the mechanical work without going over the top in other places. We've got a Range Rover on our roster and this looks like an excellent way to check that box.
