This 60 series Land Cruiser is checking a lot of boxes for us. The diesel motor, scruffy but serviceable condition, and PA inspection sticker combined with spring temperatures have us wondering what Central PA breweries we'll stop at while we're driving it back to Moto Roster HQ. We're even thinking we can spin the automatic transmission as making this a practical family car in a pinch.
We have a bit of experience with diesel Canadian Land Cruisers, and the tl;dr is: motor great, rust bad. The seller of this wagon claims there are some rust bubbles under 5 year old paint which is a bit worrisome.
He's also forthcoming about a small hole forming in the frame that was he had "done professionally." Photos look generally clean underneath, but some in-person inspection would provide peace of mind as to the frame's integrity as well as how much ugly is being hidden by paint.
Inside the interior is described as "near perfect" and, though that may be a bit of a stretch, it does look to have held up well for a 30 year old truck. Manual windows are in working order and are our prefered option. A new front windshield has been fitted with what looks to be a fresh seal.
A non-op A/C isn't a big deal but we'd troubleshoot to see if there's an easy fix. A bit more worrying is a slow oil leak that the seller claims is from a gasket seal. The seller also says that the sway bar links will need to be replaced soon and that might be a good impetus to refresh the whole suspension with some help from the folks at OME.
New tires and batteries are a nice start to a driver though you know that we'd end up with some BFGs and a light lift if time and money allowed after getting everything else serviced and sorted.
The seller says that the “transmission shifts perfectly and engine runs and drives perfect.” No mention is made of the 4WD system so that would need to be tested while you’re confirming the perfection of motor and transmission.
With the finally winter leaving PA, this may be a good time to pick up a truck like this for a low-ish price. It's a vehicle that needs an in-person inspection by someone who knows what to look for in terms of disastrous rust. It's never going to be a show car, but if it's solid, it could make an awesome go anywhere rig.
