Though it's army green, this is a civilian spec G class with a gas engine and plenty of bumps and bruises on the outside. The inside looks very clean, and with less than 60k Spanish miles on it, it could be a winner.
Though most people prefer the diesels, this 230GE is otherwise setup very much to our taste. The 4 door with the ambulance doors in the back is a practical setup and it looks like the left ambulance door can just squeak by the new spare mounted in the back. The body has plenty of scratches and the bumpers look like they have served their purpose on numerous occasions.
Non-trivial rust is present on the right rear quarter panel surrounding the filler lid. A replacement panel is included, but purchasing the sheetmetal is the easiest part of that undertaking. A good deal of the rust is hidden by the spare tire, and if it's not affecting the brake light and filler neck, we'd probably try to get by with some temporary remediation for a bit.
On the inside, you can't go wrong with 80's German plaid and this interior looks to be in great shape. The dash mounted inclinometer makes us wonder what kind of off road aspirations the seller had and we like the stock radio though we are curious whether it can pick up any stateside stations.
Though it's a small engine, and the diesels are our preference, we think the 230 is worth a shot. 125 horsepower (at a strained 5000 RPM) is a large increase over the diesel. Torque numbers are also decent, but they too come at high RPMs so it's less than ideal for off road applications. That said, the 5-speed with dual lockers should get you just about anywhere and back.
No shots of the underside are shown, but it's current California locale and Spanish country of origin give us hope that it's relatively clean. Similarly, there are no photos of the rear cargo area so hopefully that's just an omission and not hiding anything. We're always happy to see new rubber on all 5 wheels.
