This Boxster is for sale up the road from us and it has caught our eye a number of times when driving by. We subscribe to the idea that the 996 is the Porsche deal to be had right now, but maybe the Boxster is even more of a sleeper deal.
We feel like Miatas have finally earned the respect that they deserve, so why not the Boxter? Though it weights in a bit heftier than it could, and it's a little underpowered, we're still talking about a mid-engined roadster with 200 horsepower. What's not to like?
No photos are shown of the motor, and the seller claims that it's a 2.5 liter but that doesn't match with a 1999 date. If it is indeed a 99, it should have the 2.7 liter unit putting out 217 horsepower. We're far from experts on Boxsters so we don't know if there are any obvious model year differences in these first generation Boxster but maybe a reader can quickly zero settle the year discrepancy.
With only 99,000 miles, the car presents well. We dig a red interior, and we also like the fact that Porsche stuck with basically the same shifter for nearly 20 years. It's also amazing how dated HVAC and radio controls can look.
The faux 3-piece 18 inch rims look appropriate if used, and the paint and top look good in the less-than-ideally lit photos.
The seller claims that this car "runs strong", "shifts flawlessly" and has been "well maintained." If there is some documentation to back that up and a test drive gets the thumbs up we're starting to think this could be a lot of car for the money.
It will cost a bit more to buy and maintain than a Miata, and it's not as high revving or unique as an S2000, but in terms of well balanced, top down motoring for under 10K we're bullish on the Boxster.
