This 1976 911 S has deviated a fair bit from stock, but in a good way as far as we're concerned. The 2.7 liter motor has been replaced with the 3.0 from a later SC while retaining the 915 gearbox, and cosmetically a very light "R Gruppe" look has been attempted. The real draw here though is the $26,500 price tag attached to what sounds like a lot of air cooled fun.
We still don't have anything but whiffs of a trend, but it sure seems like the air cooled Porsche bubble is deflating. There are still plenty of sky high prices out there for original cars but, even with its swapped engine, this car seems like one that would have fetched a much higher number only a year ago.
The 3.0 liter engine was installed 20 years ago when the 2.7 pulled some head studs. No details are given about the miles on the new motor before it was installed nor after but the seller says that it was completely resealed when it was reinstalled and still "does not leak a drop of oil" which, if true, is impressive.
Lots of new work is listed including new brakes and flex lines, a short shift kit, clutch cable, and Yokohama tires on Fuchs. New stainless headers (with heat!) are also listed along with an EBS oil cooler, new fuel injectors, tie rods, fuel pump, alternator, and a brake master.
The inside looks good for a 40 year old vehicle with a new Porsche carpet kit that's a few years old and only a few wounds on the seats.
Outside, the 5 year old paint job is described as a 10 footer. Some trim has been stripped along with the antenna which we are ok with. The only rust mentioned are some "pencil point bubbles" on the outer edge of the drivers door with everything else being solid. No shots are shown of the undercarriage which will need some investigation even with the post-75 galvanization.
We've been eyeing a 996 as our next vehicle as it seems to be the best combination of "practicality" and value out there at the moment, but if we were in Memphis we'd be on our way to take a look at this one to see if maybe we should live that air cooled life again.
