We've got vintage 4X4's on the brain as of late. We know that winter isn't the time to be buying them, nor the time to be selling coupes to make garage space, but such is the Moto Roster syndrome. This 1981 Wagoneer is scruffy, but clean (for Western, PA at least) and is billed as the personal vehicle of a local, somewhat-eccentric car dealer (the aforementioned Jim).
Though it's the lowest of the 3 Cherokees that Jeep offered in the middle of its AMC years, it looks to have lived a well-cared for life. The seller claims that the 38,000 miles are original, though their are some records indicating that the odometer has rolled over at least once.
We'd tend to agree with the 138,000 mile theory but we are scouring the photos and we have to admit there is a chance that there are in fact less than 40,000 miles on this early-SUV. The Wagoneer is definitely used but not used up. It could be that the wear is a matter of years, not miles.
The AMC sourced 6 cylinder was the "thrifty" fuel choice which would have been a sensible option after the gas crisis in 1979. Jeep advertised up to 25 MPG highway with their little motor which is impressive. Not so impressive is the near 20 second 0-60 time the 258 cu motor mustered.
Things look generally original and tidy both inside and out. Some bumps and bruises are present outside along with "wood" veneer that has seen better days. Things are clean inside with some splits on the bench seat but nothing too worrisome.
We love the "Heathkit Wiper Delay" module which is straight out of 1970's Popular Science.
This dealer often has interesting semi-vintage trucks, including an 88 Land Cruiser that we have given more than a casual glance.
It might be worth a trip to Johnstown, PA to check out this Wagoneer, meet Jim, and see what else he's got kicking around Flood City.
