Normally these kinds of conversions give us pause but this one looks to be neatly done, and more importantly swaps the troublesome Audi bi-turbo V6 with a workhorse 2.0 liter VW TDI. If you're willing to put some faith in the folks at Ottostadt Motorwerks, this could be the Allroad that should have been. Thanks to Dimitry B for the tip on this one.
Though the original V6 looks great on paper and seems like it should share a good deal of components with the previous generation S4's, it actually has a lot of specific parts that make maintenance a pricey endeavor. Even with its bi-turbo HP output, things are still pretty slow with the original motor so we don't mind trading HP for torque and fuel economy with this swap.
The swap retains everything from "AC to cruise control" and "all sensors, diagnostics and warnings working like factory" which, if true, is either impressive work by the swapper or a testament to interoperability up the supply chain at VW/Audi. Under the hood the TDI fits like it was meant to be there.
Beyond the swap itself, over $5,000 in maintenance has been done including "new clutch, timing belt, thermostat, glow plugs, camshaft and lifters, and balance shaft delete." Additional unspecified safety items have also been done to satisfy Ontario inspection.
A 6-speed was also swapped in and we'd be interested in where it came from and how it mates up with the AWD. The shifter is Allroad spec and could use a bit of finishing trim inside.
The awesome-when-it-works adjustable air suspension remains and strikes us as another impressive feat to get it talking to the new TDI ECU. That said, while we're monkeying around with this car we'd be happy to have some coils and springs swapped in to further the "fixing" of the Allroad's quirks.
High-ish mileage is listed and we're not sure if that's on the new motor or the rest of the car. Either way $12,800 (Canadian?) seems slightly ambitious for this VW in Audi clothing. This type of swap is normally the territory of the folks on the TDI forums so maybe it's worth the premium to have it done by an actual Euro shop.
