To celebrate the last year of the Japanese-built J80 Land Cruisers, Toyota put out the "Special Edition" package which was basically some badges and paint. This particular truck however really became "special" later in life. At some point on its journey to cover over 300,000 miles, a 1HDT diesel motor was fitted along with a 5-speed manual.
The seller is pretty tight lipped with details, but the photos show a generally clean, well cared for truck. It lost its original wheels and picked up some trim and bumper paint but nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of tweaking. Records show that this has been a Southern car for most of its life and the condition seems to bear that out.
Inside, things look much nicer that we normally see in these 20 year old trucks. Bolsters are still holding up well and there are no visible rips. It's an extremely minor thing, but we like seeing what look to be Weathertech mats all around. Maybe we've been brainwashed by years of Car & Driver ads, but we generally find owners who spend the money for those mats are the kind of people we want to buy vehicles from.
But enough dancing around, the real attraction here is under the hood. There is only one shot and no description but it shows a very nicely installed Toyota turbo diesel motor. This would have been a standard offering in ROW Toyota vehicles so it's not surprising that the motor looks right at home.
It's mated to a 5 speed manual transmission, but again no details are given as to its origin or installation date. The seller does say that there are "many new original Toyota parts" and mentions complete drive shafts and water pump.
With a starting bid of $20,000 (and an unmet reserve at that price) we'd expect some more details but we are definitely intrigued. Most of the swaps that we see on these trucks are on the IH8MUD forums where they're powering trail rigs so it's interesting to see this as a more street-oriented / daily driver setup.
