In our last feature, we preached that now is the time to buy (and maybe get a deal on) a "non traditional" winter car. We're ignoring our own advice now as we showcase one of the consummate snow cars of the late 80s and early 90s. In a time before SUVs were common, the mountain roads leading to ski resorts from Colorado to Vermont were crawling with these luxo-snowmobiles - and for good reason.
This 200 is the final year of a model that traces its direct roots back to the 5000's and it benefits greatly from those years of evolution. The 20V motor was able to move this AWD beast to 60 in less than 7 seconds. Updated body work and flared fenders gives a more aggressive look and makes room for bigger tires.
This particular car has received a new g60 turbo, a Minhea chip, and a new cat-back exhaust that the owner claims makes it good for "at least 280HP." That sounds a bit optimistic to us, but if it was all done properly it will undoubtedly add to power to what was already a capable motor.
The 5-speed really makes this car desireable but with 200k+ miles and some performance upgrades, we're disappointed to see no mention of an upgraded or replaced clutch.
Some recent suspension and tune up work is noted though, specifically: Kyb struts up front with Bilsteins in the back and stock springs should keep the ride height as-specced but slightly more willing in corners.
New front control arms (along with bushings) are nice to see as we have spend way too much money on Audi control arms in our lives already. New plugs, cap, rotor, and crank / rpm sensors along with a timing belt 20k miles ago mean this car should be reasonable ready to go.
Current tires are Michelin x ice studless and look reasonably new in photos though they will limit this car to cool weather use if you want to make it more than 5000 miles.
We like the “bamboo metallic” paint as an alternative to the pearl white that’s normally seen in earlier Audi’s and the “travertine” interior looks to be in good shape with weathertech mats covering the carpet.
Though it's a 1991 model, we look at this as the pinnacle of 80's Audi's. When this car landed on US shores Audi was still reeling from the 60 Minutes / "unintended acceleration" scandal and this wagon probably never got the mainstream attention that it deserved.
Attitude has adjusted 25 years later and these cars are recognized for the competent, luxurious performers that they always were.
