These 5 series wagons seem to be much more common now that they've trickled down to second and third owners. Everytime we see one on the street we peek inside and 99 times out of 100 we're disappointed to see only two pedals. This one not only has the 6 speed, but the big motor, and some Dinan goodies to go with it.
First off, $23,000 for an eight year old BMW wagon with over 100k miles on it is a stretch no matter how much of a "unicorn" it is. That said, there aren't too many 6 speed 535 wagons running around out there so maybe the seller knows his captive market.
This wagon looks interesting with staggered M5 rims filling the wheel wells nicely (if maybe a bit too wide in the back) and somehow evening out proportions. No mention is made of any special suspension work so hopefully any possible rubbing is dealt with via properly sized tires. The original rims are included along with a set of low mileage Michelin Pilot Sport tires.
The blue paint looks good, though there was no small amount of work done after this car was hit from behing. Photos are provided of the accident that the seller claims totalled the car that rear-ended it. The accident is given a positive spin by seller who says it was an opportunity to get new front and rear bumpers, tailgate, and a new exhaust.
$20,000 in receipts have accumulated during this seller's ownership encompassing "brand new turbos, fuel injectors, coils, tires, struts and a clutch." All of the paperwork is available and we'd be interested in seeing it because, though substantial, the listed work doesn't add up to 20k. Perhaps the accident-related work is included in that number?
In terms of fun, a Dinan stage II chip is installed and is good for a claimed 380 HP. BMW's lowball estimate from the factory was 320 so it's not impossible that this wagon is pushing over 350 HP with some upgrades. Though practical, we can't help but wish that the AWD system was skipped and all of those ponies were routed through the rear wheels.
Inside things look great with the pricey Dakota leather on the sport seats, a huge sunroof, and a cavernous cargo area. The seats are claimed to be adjustable 20 ways which must involve some sort of PhD level 4-dimensional geometry.
The only thing that we don't like about this wagon is the price. Mechanically it's claimed to be good to go, and the upgrades are nice to haves but the accident is a bit of an issue. For 15k the accident starts to take a backseat but at a premium price like this, it's an issue for us.
If you're in the market for a 6 speed, 300+ HP AWD wagon and money's no object, accident be damned. Buy it here on eBay in Phoenix, Arizona.
