Out taste in 4x4s usually tends toward Land Cruisers, Land Rovers, and Willys'. This ex-military 1987 Humvee makes all of those look like toys. We know it's ridiculous, and who knows what it takes to get a plate on this thing, but still: this seems like a lot of vehicle for $11k.
We're reminded of the stories about $50, packed-in-cosmoline, surplus Jeeps that the boys at Car Talk used to talk about when reading this listing. There are cheaper Humvees on offer via various military surplus auction sites, but they usually involve "hold harmless" paperwork and other hoops to jump through. If this one has a clean NY title, it's worth paying a little bit for the convenience.
And paperwork would be about the only convenience here. Things look to be in very good shape inside and out, but climbing into the cab is a reality check that this is a military vehicle. Waterproof switches, an M16 holder, and canvas doors immediately put the civilian world behind; and who needs cruise control when you have a throttle lock? An automatic transmission is a necessity, not a luxury. That said, the listing claims it has AC, and again, that was a necessity in some of the theaters where this vehicle could have been deployed.
For farm or ranch duty, this would be fantastic. Incredible approach and departure angles, ability to wade 4+ feet of water, and a huge towing capacity would make this beast practical in the right setting. Serious offroaders have written these off due to their ample presence, but there's no doubt that these are beyond capable vehicles.
Low mileage, and an engine that is claimed to have not even gone through the break in period means that this vehicle has likely sat for the last 12 years after its Maine-based overhaul in 2004. The 2 minor MWOs listed include a power steering cooler and a relocation of the parking brake interface.
We know it's ridiculous, but for a buy it now of $11,500, we could see getting a cheap paint job, losing the cargo cover, and having the most capable (and hardest to park) shop truck in town.
