We can't resist an original red GTI with snowflake wheels, even one with eye watering price. Rebuilds and upgrades notwithstanding the $13,995 asking price is astronomical for a car with 215k miles on it. That said, we keep clicking through the photos and grinning so maybe the seller is onto something.
This 1984 Volkswagen GTI is our preferred red color and is claimed to have its original paint. It looks very sharp in the photos so it was either extremely well cared for, repainted, or photographed and lit by a skilled photographer.
The inside looks good with NOS upholstery presenting almost too brightly against 30 year old faded red plastic. Except for some fading, the dash looks to be in nice shape and free of cracks. We can’t recall if sunroofs were an option on the 84’s but we’re happy not to find one here.
The 1.8 motor has been "freshly rebuilt" but no details are given other than the rebuild involved a "fresh bottom end." Photos show a very clean motor with the vent plastic that usually cracks and crumbles to be in good shape which we take as a positive sign of care. A large aluminum radiator jumps out as overkill but may be appropriate for this VW's Texas environment.
The GTI was always about handling and this one should be great fun with upgraded Bilstein shocks and polyurethane bushings. Rebuilt brakes and fresh 185/60/14 tires should let this GTI relive its 1984 SCCA glory days and more.
The $13,995 asking price strikes us as about 100% out of line so it will be interesting to see where this one lands. If the seller gets anything near it we'll have to start stockpiling all of the sub-1k GTIs we can get our hands on and hope they pay for our kid's tuition in 15 years.
