Though we have generally heard nothing but nightmare stories about Land Cruisers that have been imported from Costa Rica, this one has a reasonable "Buy it Now" price as well as our attention. These pickups are hard to come by and though this one is far from original, it's difficult for us not to look at it through rose colored glasses of possibility.
First off, this truck has some of the tell tale signs of a flip: a shiny new paint job inside and out being the most worrisome. It's easy enough to patch over corrosion just enough to get some paint on it and have something that looks passable for a few months. That said, we've seen much worse Central American paint jobs on some of these imports. Depending on how it's constructed, we don't mind the wooden bed if it actually served real purpose in Costa Rica.
On the plus side, the seller claims that this was his (or her) daily driver in Costa Rica and that they decided to bring it home. Import records show that it's been in the US since 2014 and the purchase of a house forces the sale at an aggressive price.
The painted motor block is another red flag, and we have questions as to its provenance. The seller claims this is an HJ45, but that it has a 4 liter motor which means that the original must have been replaced at some point. The video shows an engine block that we're not familiar with so we'd do some digging to figure out exactly what's going on there. An included video leaves no doubt that it's a diesel at least.
The interior looks better than some of these imports with restrained upholstery that could pass as original at a quick glance. Outside the truck has received what look to be rims from a later model truck and street tires. We're all for skinny tires on these but we'd look to get something slightly more aggressive on there, perhaps in conjunction with some wagon wheels.
The few peeks at the underside show a frame that looks to be clean which is generally the case with these Costa Rican trucks. We’d like to see some shots of the back of the cab where water tends to lay on these. There is one shot of peeling paint on the frame that gives us pause as to whether or not the frame has been painted to hide something.
It looks like some creative exhaust work has been done and broken door handle on the passenger door is standard issue for these trucks and is easily addressed.
For $15,500, we're not expecting a perfect truck by any means but we do want an honest one. If we were near Maine we'd definitely be making a trip to see this one in person. Find this HJ on eBay in Nantucket, MA.
